The Orchardist by Amanda Coplin

The_OrchardistIt is always a treat to add the debut novel of an up and coming writer to your summer reading list, and The Orchardist by Amanda Coplin is just such a book. The Orchardist is not your typical light “beach read” but its prose is so beautifully constructed you would be remise to leave it behind this summer. The story is set at the turn of the 20th century in the Pacific Northwest. William Talmadge is a quiet and private fellow who minds his plum, apple, and apricot orchards without bothering with many outside people. That is until two young sisters; Jane and Della come into his life, both pregnant and on the run after escaping from an abusive owner of a brothel. Having already suffered the disappearance of his own sister at a young age, Talmadge does his best to provide stability and a home to troubled Jane and Della. Unfortunately, he is not immune to the sufferings life can sometimes cruelly impart, even on those who have already endured so much. “the novel is so beautifully written, so alive to the magnificence of the land and the intricate mysteries of human nature, that it inspires awe rather than depression” –Kirkus (starred review)
