access to books, news & media
Braille and Talking Book Library – BTBL lends audio and braille books to MI residents unable to comfortably read standard print materials due to a visual, physical, or reading disability. Apply for service to access thousands of books that can be downloaded directly to your phone with BARD, or request a digital talking book player and books can be delivered directly to you on cartridge through the regular U.S. postal service. And best of all, this service is FREE, there is not even a charge to return mail materials to the library. You can apply online or ask a library staff member to help you do so.
Detroit Radio Information Service (DRIS) – A service from WDET that offers verbatim readings of local and national newspapers and magazines every day of the week, plus poetry on Fridays and a “listen-along” book club. Apply to receive a special radio receiver or listen via online live stream.

Greater Detroit Agency for the Blind and Visually Impaired – Offers a wide range of services including:
* training in orientation and mobility, smart device use, computer skills, daily living skills, Braille, and more
* a lending program for assistive devices and personal help to navigate which tools are a best fit
* monthly social meetups
* personal at-home assessments
Leader Dogs for the Blind – Leader Dogs for the Blind offers white cane Orientation & Mobility (O&M) training and service dog training and placement. All of their services are free of charge to those who are eligible

The Blind Kitchen – Cooking & Kitchen Aides for the Vision Impaired plus helpful videos tips and techniques for safe kitchen use
Michigan Assistive Technology Program (MATP) – Provides access to low-tech and high-tech assistive device options for people with disabilities. MATP offers a lending library, device training and help to identify what works for you and what doesn’t.

Hadley Helps Website – Founded in 1920 by William Hadley, an educator who lost his eyesight later in life, this non-profit offers practical help, connection and support free of charge to anyone with a visual impairment, their families and professionals supporting them. With Hadley, you can discover new ways to do things that have become more difficult due to vision loss and connect with a network of peers who “get it.”
