Upcoming Summer Fun in the Wilcox Amphitheater

Shauna Anderson, PDL staff, and more celebrate the Grand Opening of the Wilcox Amphitheater in June 2024.

In the summer of 2024, we officially opened our Wilcox Amphitheater to the public – a space where patrons of all ages can enjoy the great outdoors and the library they love all in one.

Library Director Shauna Anderson explained that a driving force of opening this outdoor space was to honor the charming, walkable nature of downtown Plymouth, “We worked with the Wilcox Foundation and many individual donors to provide this amphitheater as a contribution to keep that spirit and charm alive.”

Anderson continued, “Having an outdoor space allows the library to expand on what’s possible in our building and include even more people –from hosting intimate concerts and poetry readings to outdoor play sessions for families.”

Beginning later this month, we’re kicking off a variety of events in the amphitheater, including the return of our Summer Concert Series. Interested patrons can stop by with their lawn chairs and blankets on various Saturdays or Sundays at 2pm to watch local artists, such as the RJ Spangler Band and the Paul Vornhagen Trio perform.

Musician Edna Reilly performs in the Wilcox Amphitheater at Plymouth District Library.

While the Wilcox Amphitheater hosts events for all ages, such as a celebration of Juneteenth Through Dance and a special performance by magician Ming the Magnificent, we also have dedicated youth and family programs scheduled for the outdoor space. In the coming months, families can sign up for a Hula Hoop Dance Party and two Bedtime Storytimes under the summer skies.

Additionally, to encourage everyone to enjoy the sunshine while also celebrating all that the library has to offer, we’re hosting an Outdoor Fun program on several Fridays throughout the summer season in the amphitheater with chalk, bubbles, and more for our youth patrons and their families. While we’re closed for Art in the Park weekend, we’ll still be opening up our outdoor space for similar activities for patrons of all ages.

Ultimately, Anderson said, “It’s important that we use our platform in the community to contribute to the local character and culture.”
