Lisa Ludwinski is the founder of Sister Pie, Detroit’s beloved West Village bakery known for inventive, seasonal pies and a mission rooted in creativity, community, and sustainability.
Her journey began in 2012, baking 40 pies in her parents’ Milford kitchen for Thanksgiving. From there, she built Sister Pie through grit, community support, and a love of Michigan’s local produce. By 2015, after crowdfunding, dance-marathon fundraising, and winning the Hatch Detroit contest, she opened her brick-and-mortar shop to a line out the door.
Lisa’s commitment goes far beyond baking. Sister Pie is a triple bottom line business—measuring success not just in profit, but in people and planet. The bakery prioritizes fair wages, neighborhood hiring, environmentally responsible practices, and building an inclusive, welcoming community space.
In 2018, Lisa’s vision reached a national audience through her cookbook Sister Pie: The Recipes and Stories of a Big-Hearted Bakery in Detroit, which features 75 recipes alongside stories of creativity and connection. The book has sold over 40,000 copies, cementing her reputation as both a baker and storyteller.
At its heart, Sister Pie is about more than dessert—it’s about gathering, sharing, and celebrating life through food. Lisa continues to inspire by showing how one bakery can be a joyful force for change.
