At Plymouth District Library, change is more than cosmetic—it’s an opportunity to reimagine how we serve our community. Starting this summer, the library will embark on a renovation designed to breathe new life into our spaces while honoring the familiar warmth our visitors know and love.
Director Shauna Anderson calls the project “a reinvention,” and with good reason. This multi-phase renovation will refresh every floor of the library, introducing updated designs, more user-friendly spaces, and expanded features—all while keeping the library open and welcoming to our patrons.
What’s Changing?
The renovation will begin in June 2025, focusing first on the Upper Level, which will temporarily close for the summer. Updates include new paint, carpet, and the addition of more study rooms. Don’t worry—materials from this area, including much of our nonfiction collection, will still be available for hold and pickup either in the building or at our new drive-thru window.
Later phases will bring upgrades to the main floor and the Youth Department, with a brief full-building closure scheduled for September.
Design Meets Purpose
Architects from MCD Architects have crafted a space that blends classic charm with timeless design. Expect warm, rich tones and a timeless aesthetic inspired by the “dark academia” style—inviting yet inspiring, perfect for readers, researchers, and learners alike.
Looking Ahead
In addition to fresh finishes, the renovation introduces more seating, expanded children’s play areas, integrated technology (including 3D printers and an enhanced Tech Lab), and improved access to services. Most importantly, it reflects the ideas and needs shared by our community.
As Anderson says, “We’ve listened to our community and challenged ourselves to create spaces that enrich lives in new ways.”
Stay tuned for updates, and thank you for your patience as we build the next great chapter of your library. Questions? Email us at info@plymouthlibrary.org.
