Author Spotlight: S.A. Cosby

Reading is a wonderfully unique experience. For many individuals, it is a chance to dive into imagination and creativity. Many readers experience the sensation of visualizing settings, characters, and each scene of a story in their head like a movie. A fascinating concept to ponder is that many people can all read the same book, and each one can have different takeaways and ideas of what everything looks like. (That’s partly why us bookworms tend to be critical of movie and TV adaptations based on books. We may complain- “That’s not how I pictured the main character’s friend!” or “That character’s house should have been much grander!”)

For me personally, some books are easier than others to get a clear picture of every feature. Moreover, with certain stories, it’s natural to feel like I’m in the audience watching from afar instead of being part of the story itself.

When I read an S.A. Cosby book, it feels like I have stepped into a fast-paced action movie. You know, the ones with the typical “bad guys,” thrilling car chase scenes, and inevitable physical altercations?

Razorblade Tears was one of his most memorable stories to me. It includes one of my favorite tropes, which is unlikely heroes teaming up for one common goal. The story follows two father-in-laws as they set out on a mission of revenge for their sons who were killed. While they track down the culprits with fury, they’re forced to face their own uncomfortable biases. While these two men come from completely different backgrounds and don’t understand each other, they are united by grief, their estrangement with their sons, and the need to set things right. I really enjoyed watching their relationship strengthen throughout the story and the way they navigated bodily dangers all while battling inner sorrow.

My other favorite of S.A. Cosby’s is his most recent, All the Sinner’s Bleed. Our main character is the first Black sheriff of a small southern town. He is investigating the motive for a crime that takes place in the beginning of the book. As he delves further in, he uncovers evidence of murders that have taken place years ago which he believes could be connected to this current case. Amidst this chaos, there is rising tension towards him from the town and their collective prejudice. The atmosphere of the small town is so strong, it feels like a character all of its own. Through this book, Cosby really plays on the idea of man versus man as our hero faces backlash from his job and personal life.

Immersing yourself in a book is a powerful way to explore a new reality. Specifically, if you’re looking for a dark, gritty, action-packed thriller that’s both heart-pounding and thought-provoking, I’d recommend trying out an S.A. Cosby book.

*It’s worth mentioning that Cosby’s books do include descriptive violent scenes with gore, as well as very difficult topics that may be tough to read for some. I strongly suggest checking trigger warnings and reviews on books, especially those that fall under the thriller and mystery genre.
