Plymouth's Second Veterans Memorial - The Cannon:
The acquisition of the cannon was arranged by Oliver Showers, one of Plymouth's last surviving Civil War veterans at the time. The cannon was originally located in the corner of Kellogg Park pointing at the Main-Penniman intersection. In 1967, it was relocated to its present location in the park at Starkweather and Farmer.

During World War II, one of several bond-sale rallies was held in Kellogg Park. During the rally, a number of items including war souvenirs were auctioned off to the bidder pledging the largest purchase of war bonds. The cannon was included in the items auctioned off, and the City of Plymouth bid the highest purchase of bonds and was awarded the cannon. Mr. Freeman Hover, a Plymouth High graduate who reported this event, wrote in the Plymouth Mail in September, 1956:
"There was some talk that it would be carted off and used in one of the "scrap drives", but it never was melted down. How much the City paid for the cannon in bonds I don't recall, but I do know there are a lot of people who are glad it was left in the park"
