Welcome to FISH of PLYMOUTH-CANTON

Purpose and Principles

FISH of PLYMOUTH-CANTON was founded in 1972 by a group of concerned people from several local churches. Their goal was to establish an informal network for Plymouth and Canton residents to connect with others in the community who needed help. The FISH philosophy was, and still is, "Neighbors Helping Neighbors". FISH does not compete with established social service agencies, but does attempt to fill the transportation gaps, whatever they may be.

Membership

The day-to-day operation of FISH depends upon maintaining a base of 50+ volunteers. There are 2 main volunteer jobs: Fish of the Day and Driver.

The Fish of the Day devotes one day per month retrieving messages from the FISH answering service. She/he contacts clients regarding their requested needs and then locates a FISH volunteer driver who can meet the client's needs. FISH tries to fill all requests but since we are dependent on volunteers, some requests may not be able to be honored.

Drivers and other FISH volunteers list their availability in terms of days of the week and geographic area. (e.g. Available to drive Tuesday & Thursday; will not drive to U of M or Detroit.) They are then matched by the Fish of the Day to the client. A volunteer may feel free to turn down any assignment if it conflicts with their personal schedule. An attempt is made not to use drivers more than 2x/month unless a driver indicates a preference to serve more.

Activities

The majority of requests received by FISH are for transportation to medical or other necessary appointments.

Clients may request rides to medical appointments by calling the FISH Answering Service at 734-480-3940 one week before their scheduled appointment. and leaving their name and phone number. The answering service is available 24 hours a day. We will make every attempt to arrange a ride from one of our volunteer drivers. Our transportation service is available Monday thru Friday (except holidays) and is available to all Canton, Plymouth, and Plymouth Twp. residents who are unable to drive. There is no charge for this service — however donations are appreciated.

Volunteers: Anyone interested in being a FISH volunteer driver or caller can call 734-480-3940 and leave a message.
