LIBRARY HAPPENINGS

Hemingway in Michigan Program - Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at 7pm, U-M Flint English Professor Frederic Svoboda will present Hemingway in Michigan, a program about Hemingway's years in Michigan and the experiences which played a major role in his development as a writer. Professor Svoboda is a Hemingway scholar and the author of the catalog for the Up North With the Hemingways photo exhibit. He has written numerous articles exploring Hemingway's time in Michigan and is the co-editor of Hemingway: Up in Michigan Perspectives. Rhapsody: Music at the Library Sunday, April 6, 3:00 p.m. ~ Kelly Kaiser, Jory King, Patrick O’Neil, and Erik Partin – musicians from the Celebration Youth Orchestra, the Plymouth-Canton Symphony Society’s Youth Outreach Education Program.  Enjoy solos and duets with these talented musicians on flute, viola and violin. Gardening 101 - Thursday, April 17, 7pm. ~ It’s time to spruce up that garden!  What do you mean “What garden?”  Think it’s too much work?  Costs too much money?  Pshaw!  Let Advanced Master Gardener Sandra Healey show you how it’s done.  Join us at 7pm on Thursday, April 17, and learn about soil, sun exposure, choosing healthy plants (and getting the best deal!) and more.  While aimed at novice gardeners, even seasoned pros will surely take away some valuable tips. DIA at the Library - Monday, April 21st, 7pm ~ A guest speaker from the Detroit Institute of Arts will join us to talk about one of the museum’s collections. Register in advance at the Reader's Advisory Desk.

SPECIAL PROGRAMMING

Spring Fling for Homeschool Families- April 16th at 2 p.m. ~ Plymouth District Library is pleased to present the third annual Spring Fling for Families who homeschool.  Experience classic children’s literature in a theatrical setting as Magic Carpet Theater brings to life several favorite stories. Registration begins April 2 at the Youth Services Desk or by phone at 734-453-0750, #5.

Spiderwick Chronicles Program - Saturday, April 19th at 2 p.m. ~ Come celebrate National Library Week at the Plymouth District Library. Hear all about the adventures of Jared, Simon and Mallory Grace from the Spiderwick Chronicles. Answer trivia questions, morph into a wood elf, and make your very own sprite. Saturday April 19, 2008 at 2:00 pm for ages 5-12. Registration is required and opens on April 5; call 734-453-0750, #5.

STORYTIMES

Lap Sit Storytime for children 6 to 24 months - Lap sit storytime is a 15 minute song and rhyme time for babies on their care-giver laps. Storytimes will be held on Monday, April 14th at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and will be repeated on Saturday, April 19th at 10:00 a.m. Registration for all sessions will begin on Monday, April 7th. Limit of 16 children per session. Wait list is available. Registered care-giver and baby only, please!

Baby Play! for children 6 to 24 months - Baby Play! is a 20 minute story and play time for babies and their caregivers. Baby Play! will be held on Monday, April 28th at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. No registration is necessary.

TEENS KNITTING FOR A CAUSE - April 9, 7pm
Get together every other Wednesday, from 7-8:30 to learn to knit and create warm items for people in need. In the past we’ve made chemo caps and blankets. If you have knitting or crochet needles, bring them.

Anime/Manga Character Contest  - Create Your Own Character and Enter to Win Prizes – Autographed copy of Mark Crilley's Miki Falls, Spring and Art Supplies Entry forms available online or at the Reader's Advisory Desk after March 15 Entries must be hand drawn with no computer-generated content Deadline for entries is April 15. Winners will be selected by author/illustrator Mark Crilley.  Winners will be announced and prizes given at the Mark Crilley event on Wednesday, April 16 at 6:30.

MARK CRILLY PROGRAM - Wednesday, April 16, 6:30 pm. ~ Author/illustrator, Mark Crilley will speak and do a live drawing demonstration.  Crilley is the author of, the Akiko series (see Youth Fiction), The Menace of Rellapor, and the recent Miki Falls series that can be found in the Teen Zone Graphic Novels collection.
Learn some “how-to” tips from an expert! Program is open for students in grades 5-12

SLAM! ~Wednesday, April 30, 7pm ~ Canton High School teacher and poetry slam specialist, Larry Francis, will return to the Library on Wednesday, April 30 for another Poetry Slam.  If you’ve never been to a slam that Larry has emceed, don’t miss this one.  Participation is wide-open – plan to perform or sit back and enjoy being a part of the active audience.  Register at Reader’s Advisory Desk – 734.453.0750, ext. 4.

TEEN ADVISORY BOARD (TAB) –-Saturday, April 12, 3pm
Teens, 12 to 18 years old, are invited to share ideas for improving the Library’s teen programs and services. Muffins and juice will be provided. No registration is necessary. Need community service? Receive one hour of service for every meeting you attend.

LIVE HOMEWORK HELP – Online tutors are waiting to help, Monday – Friday, 3pm-midnight. They are available for all grade levels and all course levels. LIBRARY GROUPS MEETING DURING APRIL

$$$ AND SENSE –– Wednesday, April 2, 1-2:30 pm
Join with others who are interested in learning and sharing information on personal finance and investing at this discussion group at the Library. In its second year, the group provides a forum to study and share personal investment information, learn investment terminology, review different investment tools, and study individual stocks, mutual funds, annuities, etc. Each month, members follow and report on a mock portfolio they set up on the Internet. This is not a stock club, no monies are involved; members plan, moderate, and participate in each meeting. New members are welcome at any meeting. Meetings are usually held on the first Wednesday of the month in a Library meeting room.

LOW VISION SUPPORT GROUP – Thursday, April 3, 1 pm
This meeting will take place on the first Thursday of every month. Participants will share advice on coping skills and adaptive technologies in a supportive atmosphere. A qualified facilitator will lead the group. Library staff members will be on hand to provide assistance with Library equipment, services and offerings. COMPUTER NEWS


Plymouth residency is required for all attendees of the Library's computer training classes. Please register by calling 734-453-0750, ext. 4.

INTRO TO MS WORD –Wednesday, April 2, 10:00 am -11:30 am ~ Students will learn how to open, close, modify, save and print a basic Word document. The class covers basic features of this software program only. Students must be comfortable keyboarding and using a mouse prior to taking this class.

BASIC INTERNET SEARCHING –Monday, April 7, 3:00 - 4:30 pm ~ This class for Plymouth residents will help computer users learn the basics of using the Internet. This will include an explanation of terms, use of a browser and utilizing search engines on the World Wide Web. Participants should be comfortable with the Microsoft Windows basics and using a mouse. Training is based on the hardware and software available in the Library.

INTERMEDIATE MS WORD - Wednesday, April 9, 10:00am - 11:30 am ~ In this class students will learn how to adjust a layout using Page Setup, use auto correct, insert dates and symbols, work with two Word documents at the same time, and more.

INTRO TO MS POWERPOINT - Thursday, April 10, 10 am - 11:30am ~ Learn the basics of how to do a computer slide presentation using Microsoft Powerpoint. Topics include selecting a template, adding text and graphics, and then putting the entire finished product together into a slideshow. Participants must be comfortable using MS Windows and have good keyboarding skills.

COMPUTER BASICS –Saturday, April 12, 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm ~ This course is designed to teach Microsoft Windows and basic mousing skills to Plymouth residents. This class provides one session of mousing practice and hands-on work with the keyboard and Windows. Participants are urged to return during the Drop-in tutoring sessions for additional practice.

ADVANCED MS WORD - Tuesday, April 15, 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm  ~ Students will learn how to insert bullets and numbering, alphabetize, use tables, insert symbols and more.

BASIC EMAIL –Wednesday, April 23, 11 am - 12:30 pm ~ Learn how to create a free e-mail account using Yahoo in this one-session class. You will also learn how to compose, send and delete email messages on that account.

TIPS for GOOGLE and YAHOO –Saturday, April 26, 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm ~ Join us to learn how to do so much more with these two popular search tools. You’ll learn how to access word definitions, measurement conversions, instant maps, stock quotes and more.

ADVANCED EMAIL –Wednesday, April 30, 11:00 am -12:30 pm ~ For Plymouth patrons who have Yahoo accounts, you will learn how to create an address book and signature file. Tell electronic junk mail good bye – you will learn how to use an e-mail filter to get rid of it once and for all.

DROP IN COMPUTER TRAINING – Saturdays, April 12 & 26, 10am-12:30 pm ~ High school students will teach Plymouth residents to use a mouse, Windows 2000, the Library catalog, the Internet and how to set up a free e-mail account using Hotmail or Yahoo! We do offer basic training in MS Word. However, we do not offer training in Windows Vista or other software programs.
