LIBRARY HAPPENINGS

Rhapsody: Music at the Library Sunday, March 9, 3:00 p.m. ~ Paul VornHagen Jazz Trio An American Songbook of Jazz Standards presented by Paul VornHagen on saxophone, flute and vocals, Tad Weed on keyboard, and Kurt Krahnke on bass. The program includes compositions by Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Thelonius Monk, among others. Join us for this free musical concert sponsored by Friends of the Library. Michigan Family Field Trips Thursday, March 13, 7:00 p.m. ~ Whether you’re looking for indoor fun, outdoor adventures, or an outing that focuses on your child’s interests, there is plenty to choose from not far from home. Guest Speaker Ellyce Field, Author and Detroit News Columnist, will share information about great museums, nature centers, tours, festivals and out-of-the-way sites that help children develop curiosity about the world. DIA at the Library - Monday, March 17th, 7pm ~ A guest speaker from the Detroit Institute of Arts will join us to talk about one of the museum’s collections. Register in advance at the Reader's Advisory Desk.

Spanish for Beginners - Saturday, March 22 from 9:30-4:45 ~ Get a jump start on learning Spanish with an all-day workshop taught by Ryan Cooper.  Meant for absolute beginners, Mr. Cooper will use interactive and engaging methods to teach you the Spanish that you would learn in the first few weeks of a Spanish course.  Mr. Cooper has worked with Spanish for over 10 years as a high school teacher, tutor, and interpreter. .  Register in person at the Reader’s Advisory desk, by phone at 453-0750 #4, or online at plymouthlibrary.org.

SPECIAL PROGRAMMING

Family Science & Reading Program - March 15 at 11 a.m.: Melting Away: Protecting the Poles.
~ The Library, in conjunction with the University of Michigan Exhibit Museum will present a series of programs celebrating International Polar Year . This series is intended for kids 5 - 12 years old with their parents. No younger siblings, please. Register starting March 1st. at the Youth Desk on the Lower Level. This is limited to 25 children and parents !

Preschool Parade on March 4, 7-9 PM ~ Parents can meet with several area preschools to learn more about their programs, their curriculum, student/teacher ratios and other important information. No registration required.

Rabbit Rescue - March 25th at 2 p.m.~ Debbie from the Rabbit Rescue Program in Plymouth will be here with some of her rabbit friends  Learn fun and amazing facts about rabbits and the Rabbit Rescue Program. This program is for children ages 5 to 12 and their parents. No younger siblings, please. Registration begins March 11th and is limited to 40 kids.

STORYTIMES

Lap Sit Storytime for children 6 to 24 months - Lap sit storytime is a 15 minute song and rhyme time for babies on their care-giver laps. Storytimes will be held on Monday, March 10th at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and will be repeated on Saturday, March 15th at 10:00 a.m. Registration for all sessions will begin on Monday, March 3rd. Limit of 16 children per session. Wait list is available. Registered care-giver and baby only, please!

Baby Play! for children 6 to 24 months - Baby Play! is a 20 minute story and play time for babies and their caregivers. Baby Play! will be held on Monday, Ferbruary 25th at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and repeated on Saturday, March 1st at 10 a.m. The next month's session of Baby Play! will be held on Monday, March 24th at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and repeated on Saturday, Feb. 29th at 10 a.m. No registration required.

Preschool / Family Evening storytime for children 2 to 5 years old- These programs allow siblings and other family members to attend as long as one member is between the ages of 2 and 5. Storytimes start at 7:00 pm.
Tuesdays, March 4 - 25 OR Wednesdays, March 5 - 26.

Registration for both sessions begins Tuesday, Feb. 26.

Toddler/Parent storytime for children 2 to 3 1/2 years old- Two programs will be offered. The 10 a.m. program is for one adult with each toddler. Exceptions are made for twins. The 11 a.m. program allows other family members to attend as long as one member is between the ages of 2 and 3 1/2.These programs run on Wednesdays, March 5 -26. Registration begins on Wednesday, Feb. 27th.

Preschool storytime for children 3 1/2 to 5 years old- Two storytimes will be offered; one at 10 a.m. and the other at 1 p.m. These programs run on Tuesdays, March 4 -25. Children must be prepared to attend without an adult; caretakers must remain in the library. Registration begins on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

 

 


TEEN EVENTS


DDR Tournament – Monday, March 3rd.  3-4:30 p.m. ~ Pit your wicked moves against others. Prizes and Free Food!

In Our Own Words Writing Contest ~ Short stories and poems can be submitted between March 1 and Saturday, March 29.  Entry forms and contest rules will be available in the library or online at plymouthlibrary.org/ya.htm beginning March 1.  Each entrant is limited to 1 story and 3 poems. Submit an original, unpublished poem or story. Stories must be typed, double spaced, and no longer than 1500 words (250 word/page = about 6 pages).  Poems must be no longer than 40 lines.  Stories and poems will not be returned, so make a copy.  The library reserves the right to publish the winning entries on our web site.

D.I.Y.: Thursday, March 6 ~ 3– 4 p.m. Make an iPod or Cell Phone Case ~ Knit, sew or use duct tape to make a new case for your iPod, mp3 or cell phone. We'll supply patterns and materials.  You add your creativity.  Register at the Readers Advisory Desk.

BOOKS & BITES– Monday, March 17 ~ 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Slam by Walter Dean Myers
Sixteen-year-old "Slam" Harris is counting on his noteworthy basketball talents to get him out of the inner city and give him a chance to succeed in life, but his coach sees things differently. Advance registration is required, and attendance is limited to the first 12 teens who register. Pick up books at the circulation desk. TEENS KNITTING FOR A CAUSE - March 5 & 19, 7pm
Get together every other Wednesday, from 7-8:30 to learn to knit and create warm items for people in need. In the past we’ve made chemo caps and blankets. If you have knitting or crochet needles, bring them.

Anime/Manga Character Contest  - Create Your Own Character and Enter to Win Prizes – Autographed copy of Mark Crilley's Miki Falls, Spring and Art Supplies Entry forms available online or at the Reader's Advisory Desk after March 15 Entries must be hand drawn with no computer-generated content Deadline for entries is April 15Winners will be selected by author/illustrator Mark Crilley.  Winners will be announced and prizes given at the Mark Crilley event on Wednesday, April 16 at 6:30

TEEN ADVISORY BOARD (TAB) –-Saturday, March 15, 3pm
Teens, 12 to 18 years old, are invited to share ideas for improving the Library’s teen programs and services. Muffins and juice will be provided. No registration is necessary. Need community service? Receive one hour of service for every meeting you attend.

LIVE HOMEWORK HELP – Online tutors are waiting to help, Monday – Friday, 3pm-midnight. They are available for all grade levels and all course levels. Subjects include Math, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies. Live Homework Help is easy to find on the Library’s homepage – plymouthlibrary.org – look for the Live Homework Help Now icon. The page will ask for your library card number…then help is just 2 clicks away.


LIBRARY GROUPS MEETING DURING MARCH

$$$ AND SENSE –– Wednesday, March 5, 1-2:30 pm
Join with others who are interested in learning and sharing information on personal finance and investing at this discussion group at the Library. In its second year, the group provides a forum to study and share personal investment information, learn investment terminology, review different investment tools, and study individual stocks, mutual funds, annuities, etc. Each month, members follow and report on a mock portfolio they set up on the Internet. This is not a stock club, no monies are involved; members plan, moderate, and participate in each meeting. New members are welcome at any meeting. Meetings are usually held on the first Wednesday of the month in a Library meeting room.

LOW VISION SUPPORT GROUP – Thursday, March 6, 1 pm
This meeting will take place on the first Thursday of every month. Participants will share advice on coping skills and adaptive technologies in a supportive atmosphere. A qualified facilitator will lead the group. Library staff members will be on hand to provide assistance with Library equipment, services and offerings. WRITING MY LIFE STORY: A SENIOR WRITING GROUP -

Seniors can share and preserve their life stories with the guidance of Plymouth author, Jane Saylor. No previous writing experience is necessary. Come to either session or both.

PLYMOUTH LIBRARY GARDEN GROUP - NO MEETINGS CURRENTLY - RESUMES IN SPRING
Join local gardeners to share successes and learn from each other on topics of their choice. All gardeners are invited – no registration is required.

CONTEMPORARY BOOKS DISCUSSION - - Wednesday, March 19, 7:30 pm

Calling all knitters, quilters, needlepointers and other needlecrafters! Bring your latest project and work on it while sharing hints and techniques with others. This is not a teaching class, but rather a sharing group.


LIBRARY BOARD - Tuesday, March 18, 7:30 pm

The Plymouth District Library Board will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting in the Library. This meeting is open to the public. Individuals with special needs who plan to attend this meeting should contact the Library at 453-0750 if auxiliary aids or services are needed. Advance notice is required.


COMPUTER NEWS


Plymouth residency is required for all attendees of the Library's computer training classes. Please register by calling 734-453-0750, ext. 4.

BASIC EMAIL –Wednesday, March 3, 1 pm - 2:30 pm ~ Learn how to create a free e-mail account using Yahoo in this one-session class. You will also learn how to compose, send and delete email messages on that account. Call 734-453-0750, ext. 4 to register for this class.

INTRO TO MS POWERPOINT - Thursday, March 6, 11 am - 12:30 pm ~ Learn the basics of how to do a computer slide presentation using Microsoft Powerpoint. Topics include selecting a template, adding text and graphics, and then putting the entire finished product together into a slideshow. Participants must be comfortable using MS Windows and have good keyboarding skills.

MAKE A BUDGET WITH MS EXCEL ~ Friday, March 7, 11am - 12:30 pm ~ Find out how to make a household or personal budget while learning Microsoft Excel. You must be comfortable with keyboarding and Microsoft Windows basics before signing up for this class. Call 734-453-0750, ext. 4 to register for this class.

BASIC INTERNET SEARCHING –Monday, March 10, 3:00 - 4:30 pm ~ This class for Plymouth residents will help computer users learn the basics of using the Internet. This will include an explanation of terms, use of a browser and utilizing search engines on the World Wide Web. Participants should be comfortable with the Microsoft Windows basics and using a mouse. Training is based on the hardware and software available in the Library. Call 734-453-0750, ext. 4 to register for this class.

INTRO TO MS WORD –Wednesday, March 12, 1:00 pm -2:30 pm ~ Students will learn how to open, close, modify, save and print a basic Word document. The class covers basic features of this software program only. Students must be comfortable keyboarding and using a mouse prior to taking this class. Registration is required and may be made by calling 734-453-0750, ext. 4.

COMPUTER BASICS –Saturday, March 15, 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm ~ This course is designed to teach Microsoft Windows and basic mousing skills to Plymouth residents. This class provides one session of mousing practice and hands-on work with the keyboard and Windows. Participants are urged to return during the Drop-in tutoring sessions for additional practice.

TIPS for GOOGLE and YAHOO –Saturday, March 29, 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm ~ Join us to learn how to do so much more with these two popular search tools. You’ll learn how to access word definitions, measurement conversions, instant maps, stock quotes and more. Call 734-453-0750, ext. 4 to register for this class.

ADVANCED EMAIL –Wednesday, March 31, 1:00 pm -2:30 pm ~ For Plymouth patrons who have Yahoo accounts, you will learn how to create an address book and signature file. Tell electronic junk mail good bye – you will learn how to use an e-mail filter to get rid of it once and for all. Call 734-453-0750, ext. 4 to register for this class.

DROP IN COMPUTER TRAINING – Saturdays, March 2 & 16, 10am-12:30 pm ~ High school students will teach Plymouth residents to use a mouse, Windows 2000, the Library catalog, the Internet and how to set up a free e-mail account using Hotmail or Yahoo! We do offer basic training in MS Word. However, we do not offer training in WindowsVista or other software programs.
