Wednesday, February 3, 7:00 pm ~ Money Management Seminar - Roth IRA Conversion -
Matthew Erickson, Financial Advisor with UBS Financial Services, will discuss new tax rules in 2010 that allow anyone (irrespective of income or tax bracket) to convert a Traditional IRA into a Roth IRA (future distributions from a Roth IRA are tax-free).  Mr. Erickson will discuss conversion rules and considerations and provide examples. Sunday, February 21, 3:00 pm ~ Rhapsody: Footsteps to Freedom: A Michigan Opera Theatre Presentation. Footsteps to Freedom chronicles the African-American experience through a variety of musical, literary, and dance styles, taking audiences of all ages on an entertaining, enlightening, and inspiring historical journey. February 22nd - Monday at 7:00 pm ~ All About Oscar

LIBRARY GROUPS MEETING DURING FEBRuary

LOW VISION SUPPORT GROUP – Thursday, February 4, 1 pm
This meeting will take place on the first Thursday of every month. Participants will share advice on coping skills and adaptive technologies in a supportive atmosphere. A qualified facilitator will lead the group. Library staff members will be on hand to provide assistance with Library equipment, services and offerings. WRITING MY LIFE STORY: A SENIOR WRITING GROUP -

Calling all knitters, quilters, needlepointers and other needlecrafters! Bring your latest project and work on it while sharing hints and techniques with others. This is not a teaching class, but rather a sharing group.


YOUTH DEPARTMENT NEWS

Storytimes

Lap Sit Storytime for children 6 to 24 months - Lap sit storytime is a 15 minute song and rhyme time for babies on their care-giver laps. Storytimes will be held on Monday, February 8 at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and will be repeated on Saturday, February 13 at 10:00 a.m. Registration for all sessions will begin on Monday, February 1st. Limit of 16 children per session. Wait list is available. Registered care-giver and baby only, please!

Baby Play! for children 6 to 24 months - Baby Play! is a 20 minute story and play time for babies and their caregivers. Baby Play! will be held on Saturday, January 30 at 10 a.m., Monday, February 22 at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., and repeated on Saturday, February 27 at 10 a.m. No registration required.

Preschool/Family Evening storytime for children 2 to 5 years old - These programs allow siblings and other family members to attend as long as one member is between the ages of 2 and 5. Storytimes are Tuesdays, January 12th - February 16th at 6:30 pm.

Toddler/Parent storytime for children 2 to 3 1/2 years old - Two programs will be offered. The 10 a.m. program is for one adult with each toddler. Exceptions are made for twins, otherwise please make other arrangements for siblings. The 11 a.m. program allows other family members to attend as long as one member is between the ages of 2 and 3 1/2. These programs run on Tuesdays, January 12th - February 16th. Registration begins on Tuesday, January 5th.

Preschool storytime for children 3 1/2 to 5 years old - Two storytimes will be offered; one at 10 a.m. and the other at 1 p.m. These programs run on Thursdays, January 14th - February 18th. Children must be prepared to attend without an adult; caretakers must remain in the library.
Registration begins on Thursday, January 7th.

Parade of Preschools ~ Thursday, February 4th from 7 - 8:30 pm. Back by Popular Demand. Representatives of more than 20 area preschools will be in the library to answer questions about their philosophies and to help you find the best fit for your family. Parents are encouraged to attend without children, if possible. There is no registration required for this event.

Storyteller Ivory D. Williams ~ Tuesday, February 16 at 2 p.m. Ivory D. Williams, of the Detroit Association of Black Storytellers, will be here. The "D" will share stories with wit, humor and fun that promote the art of Black storytelling, an oral tradition, that will inform, educate and entertain your family. This program is intended for school age children and their families. Registration begins February 2 at the Youth Services Desk or by phone 734-453-0750 ext. 5.

Wacky Olympics for Edge Kids ~ Tuesday, February 16 at 6:30 p.m. Do you enjoy watching the Olympics on TV? Then if you're in grades 4, 5, or 6, you are invited to come to the Edge's Wacky Olympics. There will be various wacky events and competitions. So bring some friends (or meet some new ones) and go for the gold. This program is intended for ages 9-12, no younger siblings, please. Registration will begin on February 2 at the Youth Services Desk or by phone at 734-453-0750, ext. 5.


TEEN EVENTS

D.I.Y. CRAFTS - Monday, February 8 at 3:00 p.m.– Mardi Gras! Decorate masks, eat King's cake and listen to Louisiana music and find out what's happened in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina. All supplies provided free of charge. Register at the Reader's Advisory Desk.

BOOKS & BITES–Tuesday, February 9 ~ 3:30-4:30 p.m. Stealing Buddha's Dinner by Bich Minh Nguyen will be discussed. Advance registration is required, and attendance is limited to the first 12 teens who register. Pick up books at the circulation desk. TEEN VOLUNTEER TRAINING SESSIONS: Do you want to volunteer at the Library this year? Pick up a volunteer form at the Reader's Advisory Desk and sign up for a training session at the same time. Wednesday, February 17 at 7pm is the next scheduled training time.

VIDEO GAMING: Game On @ the Library on February 25 at 3:00 pm. Come in for friendly competition on our gaming consoles: Xbox 360, Wii and PS2. Snacks provided!

TEEN ADVISORY BOARD (TAB) –-Saturday, January 30, 3:00 pm
Teens, 12 to 18 years old, are invited to share ideas for improving the Library’s teen programs and services. Muffins and juice will be provided. No registration is necessary. Need community service? Receive one hour of service for every meeting you attend.

 


LIBRARY BOARD - Tuesday, FEBRuary 16, 7:30 pm

The Plymouth District Library Board will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting in the Library. This meeting is open to the public. Individuals with special needs who plan to attend this meeting should contact the Library at 453-0750 if auxiliary aids or services are needed. Advance notice is required.


COMPUTER NEWS


Plymouth residency is required for all attendees of the Library's computer training classes. Please register by calling 734-453-0750, ext. 4.

MANAGING & SHARING PHOTOS ONLINE - Thursday, January 28, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm ~ Learn about the various online options for either sharing your photos with family and friends or creating photo albums online and ordering prints to be delivered to your local drug store. Participants must be comfortable using MS Windows and have good keyboarding skills.

COMPUTER BASICS –Wednesday, February 3, 11:00 am - 12:30 pm ~ This course is designed to teach Microsoft Windows and basic mousing skills to Plymouth residents. This class provides one session of mousing practice and hands-on work with the keyboard and Windows. Participants are urged to return during the Drop-in tutoring sessions for additional practice.

MS WORD, LEVEL 1 –Wednesday, February 10, 10:00 am -11:30 pm ~ Students will learn how to open, close, modify, save and print a basic Word document. They will also learn to adjust a layout using Page Setup and use auto correct. Students must be comfortable keyboarding and using a mouse prior to taking this class.

BASIC INTERNET SEARCHING –Thursday, February 11, 7:00 pm- 8:30 pm ~ This class will help computer users learn the basics of using the Internet. This will include an explanation of terms, use of a browser and utilizing search engines on the World Wide Web. Participants should be comfortable with the Microsoft Windows basics and using a mouse. Training is based on the hardware and software available in the Library.

BASIC COMPUTER MAINTENANCE new– Monday, February 15, 7:00 pm- 8:30 pm ~ This new class will help computer users learn the basic steps you can take to keep your computer running in top shape using software that comes right on your PC. You must be comfortable with the Microsoft Windows environment and keyboard. (We will be working with Windows XP Operating System.)

COMPUTER BASICS, PART II - Wednesday, February 17, 11:00 am -12:30 pm.~ If you have successfully passed Computer Basics, this is the next class for you.  Hone your skills at clicking and dragging with your mouse.  Learn how to save and move files around on your hard drive.  Become comfortable using your Start Menu items.  You must be able to use the mouse prior to taking this class !

MS EXCEL, LEVEL 1 - Monday, February 22, 10:00 am - 11:30 am ~ Find out how to make a household or personal budget while learning Microsoft Excel. You must be comfortable with keyboarding and Microsoft Windows basics before signing up for this class.

MS WORD, LEVEL 2 - Wednesday, February 24, 10:00 am - 11:30 am ~ In this class students will learn how to insert dates, bullets and numbering, alphabetize, use tables, symbols and more. This class is for students who have completed MS Word, Level 1 or have the equivalent experience.

DROP IN COMPUTER TRAINING – January 30, February 13, & February 27, 10am - 12:30 pm ~ High school students will teach Plymouth residents to use a mouse, Windows 2000, the Library catalog, the Internet and how to set up a free e-mail account using Hotmail or Yahoo! We do offer basic training in MS Word. However, we do not offer training in Windows Vista or other software programs.
