• Keep reading fun: link reading with pleasure in kids’ minds. Do not require a report, work page, or project on every item a youth reads.

• Read aloud at all ages: Board books, picture books, chapter books.

• Be seen reading and enjoying it: quoting, laughing, learning, sharing. Let youth know it is alright to switch books if you do not like what you have started.

• Encourage youth to read magazines, books, or Internet sites, related to activities they enjoy: Music, sports, animals, art, cars, etc.

• Free your child from constant reminders about reading level: Reading some easy materials will give youth a feeling of success. As they catch the desire to read the reading level will naturally increase.

• Allow some books to be read along with an unabridged talking book.

• Use the following books and WEB resources to find books you think your child will like: Whet their appetites by reading a small section or a description then leave the book around where they can read it.
