Best of History Web Sites - Wide variety of content including subject gateways, primary resources, maps, virtual tours and multimedia presentations.

The History Net - A very wide-ranging general history site with profiles, articles, and links. Feature articles updated weekly.

The History Channel Online - The sister site to the cable television channel. Feature articles updated monthly.

PBS History Online - The sister site to the Public Broadcasting Network has original feature articles, program information and supplements, biographies, and curriculum information for teachers.

The History Place - A general history site associated with the Amazon.com bookshop. Feature articles updated weekly.

UShistory.org - UShistory.org is a creation of the Independence Hall Association in Philadelphia dealing mainly with historical places, events ,and figures from the Revolutionary era in that city.

American and British History Resource Guide
This Rutgers University page contains a vast array of American History resources for students and researchers.

A Hypertext on American History - A collectively authored outline of U.S. history from the colonial period until modern times.

Historical maps - A collection of historical maps from around the world at the University of Texas at Austin.

Historical World Geography maps - A link collection to historical maps for a variety of areas and periods.

Institute for Historical Research - This British site contains materials covering a wide range of historical topics, emphasizing European history. Includes materials in German, French, and Spanish.

The Labyrinth: Resources for Medieval Studies - Sponsored by Georgetown University, this resource provides links related to the Middle Ages, including both primary & secondary texts.

Rulers of the past and present - A list of heads of state and heads of government for all currently existing countries and territories.

Historians and Philosophers: A collated web index - A guide to the works of historians and philosophers from the classical period until the present.

Encyclopedia Smithsonian -Encyclopedia Smithsonian features answers to frequently asked questions about the Smithsonian and links to Smithsonian resources on subjects from Art to Zoology.

The National Archives and Records Administration - NARA gives ready access to essential evidence that documents the rights of American Citizens, the actions of federal officials, and the national experience. The site contains a digital classroom, exhibit hall, and bookstore.

Library of Congress Online Exhibitions Online articles and displays of historical materials from various LC collections.

Meeting of the Frontiers America, Russia, and the meeting of the Frontiers. This is a digital collection of photos, manuscripts and primary documents relating to this aspect of our history.

The American Memory Project - Historical collections for the National Digital Library.

Museum of African-American History - Web site for Detroit's own black history museum. Includes exhibit schedules and contact information.

Library of Congress Country Studies - These studies deal with a single nation, describing and analyzing its political, economic, and social institutions, and examining the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors.

National Portrait Gallery Collections - Visiting information & online exhibitions of materials from the NPG.

Early Canadiana Online - Digital library of primary sources in Canadian history from the first European contact to the late 19th Century.

Historical Text Archive - An award-winning site containing original material, links to other sites, and electronic reprints of books organized by geography/nation and topics.

Internet Archive of Texts and Documents - The Hanover College History Department has created electronic editions of many public domain history texts from around the world. Organized by region.

AMDOCS: Documents for the Study of American History - This University of Kansas site contains primary documents from the fifteenth century through the most recent state-of-the-union address.

A Chronology of U.S. Historical Documents - A University of Oklahoma Law Center site that includes documents relevant to American History, ranging chronologically from the British Magna Carta to President Bush's 2002 State of the Union Address.

Douglass Archives of American Public Address - Douglass is a Northwestern University database of American speech transcripts, many with commentary and related links.

History Buff - Discovery.com - A historical reference of press coverage from the 16th to the 20th century, including both original newspaper articles and material written by the webmaster.

History and Politics Out Loud - HPOL is a searchable archive of politically significant audio materials for scholars, teachers, and students. The audio files will not play on library computers, which have no speakers.

National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections This database describes archival and manuscript collections in public, college and university, and special libraries located throughout North America and around the world.

World History Archives - A collection of primary documents and articles on various contemporary and historical subjects. Generally very left-wing.

War Times Journal - This wide-ranging site contains a considerable amount of original articles, as well as numerous memoirs, wargaming rules, and lists of recommended books, movies, and computer games.

War Scholar - A Military history timeline of war and conflict across the globe 3000 B.C. to A.D. 1999.

USAF Air War College Gateway to Military and Related History - An excellent Index of military history sites, done by professional soldiers.

American War Library - A Military and Veteran registry and location database, this large site also includes burial locations, MIA/POW information, and links to other "veterans" web sites.

Veterans' Forum - The Veterans' Forum on HistoryChannel.com is dedicated to preserving the experiences of the men and women who served our nation. The Eyewitness Accounts and Veteran Locator features, along with active discussion forums, provide a place where veterans, their families, students, and history enthusiasts can connect with each other, share stories, and preserve the legacies of veterans.

U.S. Army Center of Military History - Our military's accounts of the battles they have fought since the late 18th Century.

U.S. Air Force Historical Research Agency
The Official history site for the U.S. Air Force, which became an independent service in the late 1940's.

U.S. Navy Historical Center - Mission: To enhance the Navy's effectiveness by preserving, analyzing, and interpreting its hard-earned experience and history for the navy and the American people.

The American Revolution - This site is designed and maintained jointly by H-Net, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and PBS as a companion to the PBS "Liberty!" documentary series.

Military Actions in the American Revolution - The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution runs this site, which features descriptive summaries of the major battles in the campaign.

The U.S. Civil War Center - This Louisiana State University site examines the Civil War from the Southern point of view.

The American Civil War Homepage - This link list includes a huge variety of Civil War links indexed in roughly chronological order.

Home of the American Civil War - A U.S. Army veteran runs this moderately pro-southern site containing official records, biographies, and a very helpful overview section for students.

The Valley of the Shadow - The Valley of the Shadow project takes two communities, one Northern and one Southern, through the experience of the American Civil War. The project is a hypermedia archive of thousands of sources for the period before, during, and after the Civil War for Augusta County, Virginia, and Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

World War 1: Trenches on the Web - An Internet History of the Great War, from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand to the Treaty of Versailles.

The Great War: 80 Years on - A BBC News Online look back at WWI using personal accounts, newsreel footage, and historian interviews.

The Great War -"This PBS/BBC joint production contains interviews, an Interactive Timeline and photo gallery, and a comprehensive "recommended reading" list.

A People at War - This National Archives exhibit highlights the contributions of the thousands of Americans, both military and civilian, who served their country during World War II.

World War II Commemoration - Grolier Online's collection of links and articles on WWII topics.

The Wars for Viet Nam: 1945 to 1975 - This Vassar College Site includes official U.S. documents, as well as translations of materials from the Vietnamese archives. Should the U.S. have been there or not? The arguments go on...

Vietnam POW/MIA Database - This database has been established to assist researchers interested in the U.S. Government documents pertaining to U.S. military personnel listed as unaccounted for as of December 1991. Microfilmed copies of relevant documents can be obtained through the Plymouth District Library.

Congressional Medal of Honor Recipients
Full-text listings of Medal of Honor Citations from the U.S. Army Center of Military History. This medal is the highest honor an American can receive from our government.

Books for the Military Professional - The Combat Studies Institute's reading list on Military history. These include works on military theory, personal accounts, and tactical/strategic studies.

Holocaust Sites

 

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
This site contains a variety of up-to-date Holocaust information, including information about recovering stolen assets such as family money in Swiss bank accounts.

Yad Vashem - Yad Vashem is the Israeli Holocaust memorial, visited by the Pope on his trip to Israel.

The Holocaust: A Tragic Legacy
The ThinkQuest Holocaust Memorial Site has many interactive features, including a virtual concentration camp tour.

 

Simon Wiesenthal Center Home Page
Find out information about the past successes and current cases of the preeminent Nazi hunter. The site also includes links to Swiss bank information, and links to the Museum of Tolerance.

Cybrary of the Holocaust
This wide-ranging site contains numerous survivor's testimonials, material on the 5 million Non-Jewish Holocaust victims, and links to other genocide sites.

The Nizkor Project
The Nizkor project is dedicated to refuting the falsehoods of the Holocaust "Revisionists" who claim that the Nazis did not kill millions of Jews, Homosexuals, Gypsies, etc. Information provided ranges from very general to quite specific refutations of individual "revisionists."

FeMiNa History - A feminist look at world history from Webgrrls International.

Internet Womens History Sourcebook - "The Sourcebook attempts to present online documents and secondary discussions which reflect the various ways of looking at the history of women within broadly defined historical periods and areas."

Godey's Lady's Book Online - "Godey's Lady's Book was one of the most popular lady's publications of the 19th century. Each issue contained poetry, engravings, and articles by well-known authors."

WWWomen - A list of online biographies of noteworthy women throughout history.

National Women's Hall of Fame - "The Hall is a shrine to some of the greatest women in the history of this country and a tribute that grows annually as we learn to appreciate more about the wonderful contributions that women make to our civilization."

National Museum of Women in the Arts - The online gallery of "The only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to recognizing the contributions of women artists."

An international academic women's studies site with numerous specialized history links.

Women in World History - Interactive site full of information and resources about women's experiences in world history. For teachers, teenagers, parents, and history buffs.

Perseus Project Home Page - An evolving digital library on ancient Greece and Rome. Now includes features about Hercules, the Ancient Olympics, and a list of classical history links.

De Imperatoribus Romanis: An Online encyclopedia of Roman Emperors - This encyclopedia contains an index of Emperors, their known biographies, family trees, and information about the battles they conducted.

Life in Ancient Egypt - The online Egypt exhibit for the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.

The Ancient Greek World - An online exhibit on Ancient Greek life by the University of Pennsylvania.

NetSERF: The Internet Connection for Medieval Resources - A large site dealing with Medieval architecture, art, culture, literature, history, and religion. The list of links to other Medieval sites is extensive.

The Society for Creative Anachronism - The Society for Creative Anachronism is an international organization dedicated to researching and recreating pre-17th century European history.

The Castles of Wales - This site provides information on different Welsh castles accompanied by many good quality photographs, all helping to explain the story behind them.
