General Education Sites

  • Homework Help Links Math, science, history/social studies and language arts sites compiled by Plymouth Library staff for students, but parents and teachers can use them too. Language arts resources coming soon.
  • Curriculum Resource Center Patrons in the library can access lesson plans, handouts and worksheets on a wide variety of subjects.
  • Adventures of Cyberbee Home schooling & educator resources with an emphasis on integrating internet resources. The site is organized by subject. Content mostly focused on grades 3 - 6.
  • Education WorldLots of resources for education professionals and administrators. Both homeschoolers and teachers can use the lesson plan ideas, activities, and reviews of internet resources.

    Science and Math Sites

  • Discovery Channel School
    The Discovery Channel provides learning activities around their science shows (Animal Planet, TLC and others,) and lots of curricula, puzzles, activities, quiz builders and worksheets. Of course, there's lots of DVD and video content available also.
  • NASA EducationSites for educational and extracurricular projects. Teaching tools and activities for students.
  • Nova Online
    Teachers' Guides for PBS's Nova programs on a large variety of science topics and a few math programs. Includes classroom activities, student interactives, and teacher ideas.
  • Windows to the Universe Sponsored by a cooperative team that includes University of Michigan with activities and resources for earth and space sciences.
  • Cool Science for Curious KidsHoward Hughes Medical Institute site usually has 4-5 explorations on life sciences topics.

    Reading and Language Arts

  • Reading.orgFrom the International Reading Association focused on reading and literacy. Provides lesson plans, booklists & parent resources.
  • Tumblebooks Audio books with read-along text, foreign language books, reader quizzes, and more.
  • Between the Lions Parent/Teacher site with activities and resources for emerging readers. (Based on the PBS show).
  • Reading Rockets Based on a PBS show aimed at parents & teachers to help "launch" new readers. Includes tips on how to help kids who struggle with reading, techniques to teach reading, booklists, and fun reading-related activities.
  • Read, Write, ThinkSponsored by the International Reading Association. Included lesson plans for grades K-12, activities, worksheets, and links to other web resources.
  • Grow Up Reading Provided by the West Bloomfield Library includes resources and information about developing reading skills from infancy through third grade.
  • Student Writers A forum for young people's writing sponsored by University of North Carolina and University of Central Florida.


    Social Studies, History, & Current Events

  • Teaching Michigan History State of Michigan site with links for educators and parents.
  • Fact CheckED.org The Annenberg Foundation provides curriculum resources to support the current events reporting on factcheck.org
  • World Fact Book 2008 The CIA provides encyclopedic detail on every country.
  • Michigan HistoryOnline resource for hard-to-find education resources related to the state curriculum guidelines on Michigan History. Sponsored by the State of Michigan.
  • Core Democratic Values Online resources for parents, teachers and students from elementary to high-school. Sponsored by US Dept. of Education, State of Michigan, and several foundations.
  • Ben's Guide US Government web site about US history for students k-12 (with Ben Franklin as a guide.) Also check out kids.gov for resources on science, technology as well as history and government.
  • New York Times Teacher/Student Connection Includes lesson plans and resources

    Find lots of educational resources in the Parent/Teacher section at the library. (Lower Level next to Youth Non-Fiction.)


    The library has complete kits for Everyday Math, Hooked on Math, Hooked on Phonics and much more. They can be checked out and taken home.

     

    Just because it's on the Internet, doesn't make it accurate. You can check out stories and rumors at several legitimate sites.

    Of course, it's always best to use trusted sources of information, such as the web sites for newspapers, national news sources, government web sites, etc.

    For tips on how to keep children interested in reading and learning, check out some of these books and ideas.

    Elementary school students can learn about Michigan history, geography and environment at MI Kids.
